* Instead of putting lettuce on your next sandwich use spinach. Most people were unable to tell the difference in a recent study and spinach has many more nutrients than lettuce does.

* Try using mashed avocado as a spread instead of the usual mayo, cream cheese or butter.

* You will be able to use less cooking fat if you purchase yourself a good set of non-stick cookware.

* Instead of using butter or oil to saute your vegetables in, use broth or wine.

* Next time you order pizza, have lots of vegetables added to it. Also use a paper towel to blot the excess grease.

* Add peanut butter or shredded apple to your next grilled cheese sandwich.

* Place a whole ripe banana on a cookie sheet and bake it for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. After you slice the skin open sprinkle it with cinnamon or nutmeg.

* Use puree mangoes for a sauce onĀ  grilled pork, chicken or fish.

* Skip the gravy and serve cranberry sauce, chutney, salsa with poultry or meat.

* Try angel food cake topped with fresh fruit when you just have to eat cake.

* Blend up a nutritious and fast shake by using low-fat milk, low-fat yogurt, your favorite fruit and ice cubes.

* Add more fiber to your diet by tossing steamed vegetables with whole wheat pasta.

* Baste your own turkey with broth instead of using self basting turkeys injected with fat.

* Sprinkle flax seed on salads, soups, and cold or hot cereals.

* Use low-fat sour cream or low-fat evaporated milk to replace cream in your next recipe.

* For more taste and nutrition add fruits, seeds or vegetables when baking your own bread.

* Microwaving vegetables will help them to retain more vitamins and minerals.

* When buying canned fruit, make sure it is the kind packed in its own juice instead of calorie packed syrup.

* Use broth based soups since they are lower in fat content than creamed based recipes.

* Next time you eat at a restaurant split the entree with someone else or you can ask for a doggie bag "before" digging in.

* Be sure to read labels carefully on fat-free foods since many of them still contain a lot of calories.

* Ask for sauces and salad dressings on the side when eating at a restaurant and then use sparingly.

* For added fiber and nutrition add wild or brown rice to casseroles.

* You will eat less and enjoy your food more if you do not eat while you are watching television, working or driving.

* Use unsweetened applesauce for up to half the oil or butter called for in your baking recipes.

I tried your avocado idea (I just spread it on my morning toast) and it's absolutely fantastic! Because the avocado is fatty, it made an excellent spread. I'm glad I read this!

Absolutely wonderful tips! You're spot on with replacing lettuce with spinach! Lettuce is mostly water. Spinach is one of the best sources for calcium. I'm single and live off a lot of protein shakes. Whey protein, spirolina (green algae food), lecithin, juices, and mixed fruit or blueberries, and a banana when I have it. I use frozen fruit because I want to keep it around and use it when I want it instead of rushing to eat it. Fresh fruit is hard to trust. This is all great info and the older we get, the more tricks we need. Thank you very much dear Kim!

Most excellent write-up Kims...you had me at spinach and avocado. Many folks probably do not realize that spinach is actually one of the top ten super foods available today. Check out the nutrition index next time you see spinach in the store, then be prepared for a shock....You'll never eat lettuc again.
